Arno and the Low Down
Aug 26 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Arno & The Low Down have all been playing in bands for years, out of the same old cliche’ songbooks, wondering, “What happened to all of these great rock tunes that no one covers?” Well, a great song is a great song, no matter where or when it came from! So we’ve put our sound on, modernized, and revived the “Old School” rock style that we grew up with, mix in some of our own, and apply that passion to some current music too,
So come on out and strap in for a great time!

Alex2e
Aug 29 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

My name is Alex Tuohey (or Alex2e) and I’m here to explain what I’m about. To be honest, I was never a music kid growing up. I played sports my whole life and never took to music like some others did. At my high school it was seen as “uncool” and although I never thought that, I wanted to be on the jock side of the house.

Later on in life at the age of 23, a major surgery laid me up on the couch for 2 months and I hit a pretty low place in my personal life. I’m not much of a TV guy and always had a “bucket list” type thought that I’d like to learn to play guitar. So that’s what I did. Through watching countless YouTube videos and online lessons I begin to teach myself guitar and drive my parents and later roommates insane in the process. The hours turned into months that turned into years. At 24 I begin to try and sing. I worked my ass off at both and finally played my first live show at 25, accompanying a local recording artist as part of a duo. Now at 28, I play roughly 10-12 shows a month, in cities like Hartford, Boston, Burlington, NYC and Chicago. Eventually I would like to play across the country. Impossible? That’s for you to decide. As cliché as it sounds, I don’t believe anything is impossible. I plan to keep grinding, outworking and taking any opportunity to let my music be heard. Whether it’s in front of 100s of people or it’s just in “My Mother’s Bathroom”, I will ride this dream until I can’t anymore.

My new EP is named “My Mother’s Bathroom” because for awhile it was the only place that would let me play. The Talkboy you see me using (giving “Home Alone” nostalgia) is a logo I use because as a kid I would hold it up to the TV and radio to try and catch my favorite songs on a cassette tape. It’s an honor that you even took the time to read this far to get to know me a little better. Eventually, I’ll have much cooler stuff to put in here but for now I think this is a good starting point. I hope to meet you soon.

The Medicinal Purpose
Aug 31 @ 9:30 pm – Sep 1 @ 1:00 am

Rock is alive, but it’s not well…and in desperate need of some healing.

The Medicinal Purpose brings together three of New Jersey’s favorite sons on a mission to cure the masses with their raw style of Rhythm & Blues music. Out front, a voice and lyrics emerge, both shaped by years of hardship and heartbreak. Brother Sal’s soul flows through both like a morphine drip, but it does even more so in his guitar playing. Picking up where Mick Taylor and Sun Ra left off, he and his Telecaster have been known to bend everyone into a state of electroshock euphoria. The relentless pulse of the rhythm section is the product of a longtime friendship between bassist Chris Ball and drummer Andrei Koribanics, who, even at the band’s softest moments, keep everyone moving with an adrenaline-fueled groove.

After years of playing different music with different people in different bands, this line-up has come together for the common good. This is more than rock. This is sonic love that transcends time and genre. It is a product of unfettered musical trust. It is rooted in the blues, and just like all music with a purpose, it is purely medicinal.

Side effects may include shaking of the hips, bobbing of the head, mind explosions, and complex emotions.

Sep 5 @ 9:30 pm – 11:45 pm

After twenty years playing guitar, fifteen years in remission from leukemia, and now two albums into a career as a singer/ songwriter, Eric French has even more love for the blues than when he started. Celebrating milestones is satisfying, but the constant change that brings new experiences is what keeps things passionate. His band’s roster, his tone, even his songwriting style has matured since his debut double record in 2010. This is evidenced by his second LP, Old City Blues.

Cheryl Arena
Sep 8 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

Cheryl sizzles with excitement as she mesmerizes audiences with her sultry voice and powerhouse energy. She is a triple threat- a great songwriter, vocalist and blows harp like there’s no tomorrow…

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, she began playing harmonica and immersing herself into the Blues in 1987. Boston was an inspiring place to be as she was surrounded by so many talented harmonica and horn players. Her earliest childhood memories relating to music were listening and singing along with her mother’s Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday records. Her true passion though was in learning to play an instrument so at age 8 her grandmother set her up with accordion lessons..not exactly what she had in mind, but it was a start and lead to playing other instruments like guitar and bass guitar, and eventually finding the one instrument that truly resonated with her…the harmonica. She knew this was her calling so she went looking for a job that she could support herself while at the same time focusing on practicing harmonica…that job was driving limos.

For the next 4 years she spent most of her time behind the wheel of a big black stretch practicing her harp while waiting for clients. Almost immediately she was out testing the waters at jam sessions around town and within a year or so she had established her own Blue Monday Night Jam at Wally’s Cafe in the south end of Boston, a stone’s throw from Berklee College of Music, which she ran for 3 years… By then it was time to quit the limo job and go full time as a musician which she has been doing since 1991.

Her next project was holding a steady Tuesday night gig which ran for 6 years at the Marketplace Cafe in the Historical Fanueil Hall…this was different than a jam..it was more like an invitational jam where the house band changed every week and featured different guest artists. This was by far some of the best schooling she could have ever had, playing with some of the most talented local, regional and at times national artists that would come through town who had heard about the “scene” at the Marketplace. But alas the place got sold and that was the end of that…next stop…the road. Since then Cheryl has been touring regionally, nationally and internationally.

She has recorded on several cds with her most recent one, being her 1st solo effort, “Blues Got Me” including 7 original songs, backed by a stellar 7 piece band and produced by Duke Robillard, who also plays on a few cuts.

In 2001 Cheryl started sharing her gift and passion with others teaching harmonica lessons privately and to groups. In 2007 Jason Ricci introduced her to Jon Gindick who was holding one of his harmonica jam camps in Dallas TX. It wasn’t long before she got the call from Jon to teach at his next camp which was being held in Tampa Florida later that same year.

Cheryl now teaches at 4 camps a year, 3 of which are held in the “Heart of the Delta” in Clarksdale, Mississippi at The Shack Up Inn and one to be in Ventura California.

The harmonica has brought her to many exotic places and afforded her a wealth of wonderful experiences! So whether it’s on a big festival stage fronting her own band, playing an acoustic duo in some cozy little wine bar, singing and playing with a 20 piece orchestra in Dallas TX, touring around Italy, being a side person in someone else’s band, giving harmonica lessons on Skype or teaching at Jon Gindick’s Jam camps, Cheryl’s beloved pocket pal is always close to her side ready for the next musical adventure!

Chris Ruest
Sep 14 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Chris Ruest belongs to the impressive class of serious Texas blues guitarists in their thirties, a group that includes Johnny Moeller, Shawn Pittman, and Nick Curran. While the others may have wider name recognition, Ruest has quietly built a reputation of excellence that is spreading beyond his Dallas home base. A veteran with nearly two decades’ experience on the bandstand, Ruest’s passion for classic blues (jump, Chicago, and Gulf Coast) and roots rock forms comes through in an original voice that combines immediacy and authenticity. Dead-on songwriting and savvy selection of covers provide a platform for his unaffected, honest vocals and tough guitar.

The Connecticut native’s interest in guitar was encouraged by his father and his uncle, jazz musician Louis Mastrobattisto. Ruest began taking lessons at 15, hoping, rather typically, to emulate blues-based rock guitarists Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page, but soon discovered the artists who inspired them. Gradually his core group of touchstone artists expanded to include the likes of Hubert Sumlin, Pee Wee Crayton, Robert Nighthawk, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Pat Hare, Eddie Taylor, Freddie King, Magic Sam, Robert Lockwood, Luther Tucker, T-Bone Walker, Albert Collins, Tiny Grimes, and many others. After playing around Connecticut between the ages of 17 and 25, Ruest resolved to make music his main priority, gave up his factory job, and relocated to Texas in 1999.

After a brief stay in Austin, where he held down a night at the storied Joe’s Generic Bar, Ruest moved to Dallas at the suggestion of Brian “Hash Brown” Calway, another transplanted Northeasterner who is at the heart of the Dallas-Ft. Worth blues scene. Ruest credits his occasional gigs with Hash Brown as important steps in his development – “He taught Johnny and Jay Moeller and Paul Size and Shawn Pittman – all those guys came through him, and Nick Curran played with him for a while, and Elliot Sowell – some of the best guys came through his band” – and gained valuable experience backing singers Robin Banks and Wanda King (Freddie King’s daughter). His most indelible lessons in blues and life came from the legendary Sam Myers: “When I got to Dallas, I spent a lot of time, like three years, with him. Before he died, I started spending more time with him. I actually did a couple gigs under my name with Sam, which was awesome.” More recently, Ruest has enjoyed the mentorship of Mr. “Linda Lu” himself, the great (and elusive) performer Ray Sharpe.

Ruest’s band has opened for Bobby “Blue” Bland, Johnny Winter, Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, and Little Charlie and the Nightcats. 2005 brought Ruest’s recording debut as a solo artist, Too Many Problems, a spirited collection that captured crisp performances in glorious, true-to-vintage sound. The notable players who appeared on that disc, including Preston Hubbard, Matt Farrell, and “Kaz” Kazanoff in addition to Curran and Hash Brown, offer testimony to the respect Ruest commands among his colleagues. Now expanding his performance schedule to a wider circuit that includesHouston, Corpus Christi, andSan Antonio, and club and festival dates outside Texas, Ruest is preparing to record a follow-up CD and to let the world share in this Dallas-Ft. Worth secret. “My goal is to play everywhere and keep playin’.”

The Racky Thomas Band
Sep 16 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

The Racky Thomas Band has been a torchbearer for the blues since its formation in 1995, when Racky Thomas collaborated with bassist Todd Carson, guitarist Nick Adams, and drummer Ted Larkin to make a demo CD and do some gigs around the Boston area. Thomas spent ’96 and early ’97 abroad before returning to Boston, with the intent of putting the band back together and taking another stab at cracking the blues scene.

After an invitation to enter Boston’s 1997 Battle of The Blues Bands and the addition of pianist Ron Poster, the band went on to win and traveled to Memphis to compete on a national level. After not making the finals in Memphis, the band traveled home, humbled, yet with a stronger resolve.

Following the departures of Larkin and Poster, the band, in various formations, forged ahead, releasing four critically acclaimed, independently produced CD’s, including their most recent effort: Hard Travelin’, and making numerous club and festival appearances, opening for such luminaries as Luther “Guitar” Jr. Johnson, Ronnie Earl, and Sue Tedeschi; and highlighted by a trip to France in 2010 to perform at the Terri Thouars festival.

Slam Allen
Sep 30 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm

American Showplace Music recording artist Slam Allen is one of the most dynamic and original blues and soul artists on the scene today.

More that just a singer, writer, and guitar player, Slam connects with his audience like entertainers from a bygone era. Think Otis Redding, BB, Albert, and Freddie King, with a blend of Wilson Pickett, James Brown, Sly Stone and a little George Benson and Jimi Hendrix thrown in – making a Slam show a unique musical experience.

As a solo performer, Slam is the recipient of the prestigious Master Blues Artist award from the New York Blues Hall of Fame, a 2016 Blues Music Award Nominee and the proud endorsee of custom guitars by Gerhards Guitarworks and boutique amplifiers by Soul Tramp Amplification.

Growing up, Slam played drums for the family soul band “The Allen Brothers” and later on, learned guitar from his Dad, Harrison Allen and his Uncle, Cecil Allen. As he progressed in their eyes, the family knew they had a special talent to nurture!

As he developed his own style, Slam went to Chicago to learn the ways of Traditional Chicago Blues. Once there, it didn’t take long before the offer of a fill in gig for the legendary harpist, James Cotton – which led to Slam spending the next 9 years (2001 – 2010) as the lead singer, lead guitarist, and band leader for Mr. Cotton. Slam is also credited with writing and singing on Cotton’s 2011 Grammy nominated comeback album, “Giant.”

Gerry Moss
Oct 3 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Gerry Moss was born in Massachusetts in 1950 to an Air Force father. He was the oldest of 8 children.

As a musician, Gerry has lived and worked in Europe, New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, and Hardy, Arkansas.

He started to play guitar wile in England at the age of six. He watched an entertainer playing a guitar and he was hooked. He instantly knew he wanted a guitar.

Gerry attended a private high school where he began to write music. He wrote some rock tunes for a high school show that were well accepted. He began to perform in talent shows and began to attract attention as a performer.

In addition to guitar, Gerry is accomplished on Banjo, mandolin, bass Guitar, dobro Guitar and keyboards.

He is also a capable producer and engineer. As an example, a CD he produced and engineered called “Maiden Voyage” for The Michael Gray Band can be listened to in the “Music” page of this site.

Gerry has enjoyed teaching music and how to perform to young people with a patience and enthusiasm that has inspired them to meet their full potential.

Gerry can perform and headline either as a solo artist accompanying himself on guitar or with his band, MOSSMAN.

MOSSMAN performs as a 3 or 4 piece group. Each member of MOSSMAN contributes enormous skill and experience. Drummer John Ware was a member of the bands for Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and Michael Nesmith. MOSSMAN performs with abandon, yet is tight. Their performances are liberated but not reckless. You may view the MOSSMAN videos on this site (“Red Rooster” & “You Can’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover”). These videos will say more about MOSSMAN than words can tell.

Gerry also performs with bands named Red Barn Ramblers and Reckless Red.

Gerry’s first love is the blues. Much of his music reflects this. However, on the “Music” page of this site you can listen to Gerry performing other genre’s also as he performs solo on acoustic guitar. (See Nickels ‘n Dimes).

One of Gerry’s previous bands, “the Famous Unknowns,” was the house band at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Memphis, TN for over 2 years. A subsequent band, “Gerry Moss And The Drive” was also a regular at B.B. King’s.

At one time, due to his popularity and demand, Gerry performed up and down Beale Street headlining as a single or with a bad so often and at so many venues and events, he was referred to as “The Iron Man Of Beale Street.”

As a solo artist, Gerry has been the opening act for Leon Russell (3 times), Richie Havens (twice), Mose Allison, and Robby Krieger (guitarist for the Doors). Terry has been the band leader for David Lynn Jones’ band. He was also the bass guitar player for Lloyd Price (Personality, stagger Lee, Lawdy Miss Claudy).

Gerry has performed in shows with R&B and blues artists such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins, Rufus Thomas, Edgar Winter, Joe Walsh, Steve Winwood, Johnny Rivers, Mose Allison, Albert King, and Buddy Guy.

Gerry has also performed with C&W artists such as Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, Hank Williams, JR., and Clint Black’s band.

*******************************

Gerry Moss performed at Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration as a member of the Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band. Jerry Lee Lewis and Kool And The Gang were also on the bill. This is a photo of him at the inauguration with a friend. Nice threads, Gerry. Baby blue tux, white shoes. Crazy!

Joe plays acoustic guitar. Joe chooses to have the entire house band backing him on his entire set so he lets us know and we make it happen.) When we have that information it makes it easier to call everyone from the audience to get them up on the stage as quickly as possible so we keep the excitement in the air.

As a musician, this night of music is worth checking out and taking part in. Any and all musicians are welcome!
