Mikey Sweet
May 25 @ 9:30 pm – 11:45 pm

With a sound characterized by deft guitar picking and a raw, haunting voice, Northampton, MA-based singer-songwriter Mikey Sweet connects with listeners’ hearts through the simple universal power of song. With a sound described as song-centric folk-Americana, Sweet writes in the tradition of American storytelling shaped by such legends as Prine, Towns Van Zandt and Springsteen. Revealing a vulnerability rarely seen on stage, Sweet weaves themes of hope and redemption through the apocalyptic backdrop of his songs like a silk thread, evoking an emotional intensity that cannot help but affect the listener.

Self-described as a “haunting fingerprint a young lost traveler of the American landscape,” Sweet’s personal history informs all of his song writing. His cryptic lyrics pay autobiographic homage to the duality between the freedom and the isolation inherent in the transient life (although none of these songs are about him, as he’s known to say with a smirk). The confessional quality of Sweet’s poetry brings fresh nuance to the ancient art of storytelling as the troubled troubadour conjures images of the less than romantic edge of the road dog life. Says Deb Hebert of Blue Bird Reviews, “Most compellingÅ[is Sweet’s] skill for translating matters of the heart in such a way the lesson learned is universal, a trait that parallels some of our generations greatest storytellers in Springsteen, Hiatt and Browne.”

Dave Keller Band
Jun 3 @ 9:30 pm – Jun 4 @ 1:00 am

Dave Keller Wins The Blues Foundation’s 2012 –
“Best Self-Produced CD Award With Deep Soul Gem”

Taught by Paul Rishell, employed by Ronnie Earl, mentored by Mighty Sam McClain, protégé of Johnny Rawls, Keller’s ‘Where I’m Coming From’ mined from remarkable soul-blues lineage, establishes him as leading voice in future of soul music.

Blues Foundation judges crowned ‘Where I’m Coming From’ by Dave Keller of the Rhode Island Rhythm & Blues Preservation Society as the 2012 Best Self-Produced CD. Keller’s CD was chosen from the seventy-four submissions from blues societies around the globe. Keller joins past winners Robin Rogers, Roxy Perry, Nathan James & Ben Hernandez and more.

A typically humble yet elated Keller explains “The whole project started after hearing the production work on The Bleeding Edge by The Revelations featuring Tre’ Williams. I was thinking about my next recording and that CD really jumped out of my speakers. Full, funky, and extremely soulful, reminding me of Hi Records from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, but with modern clarity and presence.”

Keller contacted The Bleeding Edge’s producer Bob Perry, unaware of his chart-topping albums by artists such as Wu-Tang Clan, Brian McKnight, and Foxy Brown, only knowing he loved the sound and feel of The Revelations’ CD. When Perry responded, it was with a curveball. “I had planned to record a fourth all-original CD,” Keller says, “but Bob suggested tackling soul songs that should’ve been classics, but somehow slipped through the cracks.” Thank goodness he did – it seems to be an award-winning decision!

A distinguished group of judges from five blues record labels selected ‘Where I’m Coming From’ based on collective evaluation of (1) Blues Content, (2) Musical Performance, (3) Audio Quality of the Presentation, (4) Cover Art and Design and (5) Credits and Liner Information.

Keller’s ‘Blues Content’ was the selection of semi-obscure soul and blues songs close to his and Perry’s hearts. The ‘Musical Performance’ was provided by Keller’s vocals and guitar and complemented by Brooklyn based soulmasters The Revelations featuring Tre’ Williams. The ‘Audio Quality of the Presentation’ was thanks to aforementioned producer Bob Perry and engineer Arnold Mischkulnig.” ‘Cover Art and Design’ by Paul Grosso.

The ‘Credits and Liner Information’ succinctly reflect Keller’s humility and gratitude. Influences listed are Bobby Womack, Syl Johnson, The Patterson Twins, David & Jimmy Ruffin, Percy Sledge, O.V. Wright, Clarence Carter, Robert Ward, J.J. Barnes, James Carr, Otis Clay and Arthur Alexander.

Since 2005 The Blues Foundation has celebrated up and coming artists by bestowing an annual award for the “Best Self–Produced CD” of the year. It is a nascent and exciting award to complement the thirty-two and twenty-eight years of the Blues Music Awards (BMAs) and International Blues Challenge (IBCs) respectively.

As the winner of this year’s Best Self-Produced CD, Dave Keller receives $750 cash, airplay on Sirius XM’s BB King’s Bluesville, Music Choice on cable and satellite TV, a Blues Breaker status on The House of Blues Radio Show with Elwood Blues, and on various radio programs hosted by the judges of the first two rounds.

With Where I’m Coming From as his award-winning calling card, it’s clear that Dave Keller is grateful and qualified to be a contemporary voice in carrying soul music forward, helping to create the next generation of fans.

Alex2e
Jun 6 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

My name is Alex Tuohey (or Alex2e) and I’m here to explain what I’m about. To be honest, I was never a music kid growing up. I played sports my whole life and never took to music like some others did. At my high school it was seen as “uncool” and although I never thought that, I wanted to be on the jock side of the house.

Later on in life at the age of 23, a major surgery laid me up on the couch for 2 months and I hit a pretty low place in my personal life. I’m not much of a TV guy and always had a “bucket list” type thought that I’d like to learn to play guitar. So that’s what I did. Through watching countless YouTube videos and online lessons I begin to teach myself guitar and drive my parents and later roommates insane in the process. The hours turned into months that turned into years. At 24 I begin to try and sing. I worked my ass off at both and finally played my first live show at 25, accompanying a local recording artist as part of a duo. Now at 28, I play roughly 10-12 shows a month, in cities like Hartford, Boston, Burlington, NYC and Chicago. Eventually I would like to play across the country. Impossible? That’s for you to decide. As cliché as it sounds, I don’t believe anything is impossible. I plan to keep grinding, outworking and taking any opportunity to let my music be heard. Whether it’s in front of 100s of people or it’s just in “My Mother’s Bathroom”, I will ride this dream until I can’t anymore.

My new EP is named “My Mother’s Bathroom” because for awhile it was the only place that would let me play. The Talkboy you see me using (giving “Home Alone” nostalgia) is a logo I use because as a kid I would hold it up to the TV and radio to try and catch my favorite songs on a cassette tape. It’s an honor that you even took the time to read this far to get to know me a little better. Eventually, I’ll have much cooler stuff to put in here but for now I think this is a good starting point. I hope to meet you soon.

Bruce Katz featuring Chris Vitarello and Liviu Popp
Jun 24 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Bruce Katz is a four time (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015) Nominee for the Blues Music Award (W.C. Handy Award) for “Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year”, selected by the Blues Foundation of Memphis, TN.
While Blues is a very important part of his music, Bruce’s music has more angles and influences, occupying a unique space where blues, “soul-jazz”, jam-band rock, and all aspects of Americana Music collide into a style of original music all his own. He is equally comfortable playing Hammond B-3 Organ and Piano.
Besides leading the Bruce Katz Band, Bruce performs regularly with the Delbert McClinton Band, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, John Hammond, and other artists as well. He was a member of the Gregg Allman Band from 2007-2013.
Bruce was also an Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music for fourteen years (1996-2010), teaching Harmony, Hammond organ labs, Private Instruction and Blues History.
As a performer, Bruce has been an in-demand sideman as well as leading his own band. He has played and recorded with many of the leading names in blues and roots music, appearing on over 70 albums with artists such as Ronnie Earl, John Hammond, Delbert McClinton, Gregg Allman, Duke Robillard, Joe Louis Walker, Little Milton, Maria Muldaur, Jimmy Witherspoon, Paul Rishell, Mighty Sam McClain, Debbie Davies, David “Fathead” Newman and many others.
Bruce has a lengthy background in classical piano. After hearing a Bessie Smith record when he was 10 years old, he started teaching himself blues and early jazz on the piano. He then heard boogie-woogie and swing music and continued his musical journey into more aspects of jazz and American roots music. Bruce attended Berklee College of Music in the mid-1970s, studying Composition and performance.
For the next fifteen years, he performed with many of the leading musicians in New England, and played “on the road” for long stretches of time. After a particularly long stint of touring in the late ’80s with Barrence Whitfield and the Savages, he decided to come off the road and enrolled at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston where he earned a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance and studied with Geri Allen, Paul Bley, Cecil McBee and George Russell. It was during this time that he conceived of and started writing music that became the Bruce Katz Band.
In 1992, he met Ronnie Earl, who soon invited him to join his band, The Broadcasters. During his nearly five-year stint with Earl, Katz toured the world and performed on six albums, writing and co- writing many of the tunes, such as “The Colour of Love,” “Ice Cream Man,” and “Hippology.” The album “Grateful Heart” (Bullseye) won the Downbeat Critics Poll for Best Blues Album of 1996.
In 1992 as well, Katz debuted his first solo album, “Crescent Crawl”, on the AudioQuest label. He released “Transformation” the following year. Just before the release of “Mississippi Moan” in 1997, his third solo album, Katz left the Broadcasters to concentrate on a solo career. At that point, the Bruce Katz Band began touring the U.S. and Europe, and has been his ongoing focus, in addition to his many other projects.
In these years, Bruce played with Duke Robillard (2001-02), John Hammond (2005 – present), Gregg Allman (2007-13) and many other high profile roots, blues and rock performers, while continuing to tour and record with his own band.
Bruce’s 2008 CD, “Live! At the Firefly” (Brown Dog Music/Vizztone), was received with critical acclaim. The CD rose to #11 on the National Living Blues Radio Chart, and received substantial play on XM/Sirius Satellite Radio His newest CD, “Homecoming (American Showplace Music, 2014) is receiving international acclaim and wide radio play, putting this album at or near the top of many radio charts, including the Living Blues Radio Chart for 4 months and The Roots Music Report for 18 weeks, rising to #3 on the Contemporary Blues Chart.
Bruce has also been the subject of a feature stories and reviews in most of the leading blues and jazz publications throughtout the world.
In addition to performing, Katz teaches piano, Hammond organ and theory privately at his studio in West Shokan, NY. He also conducts Master Classes in Hammond B3 and Blues History, which he has done at various schools and music festivals worldwide.

He also worked for a short time at Rounder Records in Cambridge, MA where he received a wealth of exposure to traditional folk and bluegrass music. Two releases, one in 2004 and another in 2006 both received regional acclaim. He has performed in festivals from Santa Fe to Pueblo and Westcliffe, CO. Several flatpick contests also accent Gregg’s career. In 2002 he won the flatpick championship in Santa Fe, then placed at Wild Life West festival in 2007. He is planning a spring release for both groups.

EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT Any style music, original or cover songs welcome. No matter what instrument you play, come on down and jam. A house band is there for back up. If you’re in a band, are part of a band, or a soloist, come on down for a great night! | 10pm-1.30am

You can play any of our instruments as a participant. We provide the entire music equipment setup (we encourage people to bring their own drum sticks, guitars & bass, but it is not required). Anyone can sign up and then play away, no purchase required!

Our Open Mic is run a little differently than most other Open Mics. Each participant is able to sign up for his/her desired slot and then choose which of the house band musicians that they want backing their set. (ex: Joe signs up for 11pm-11.20pm. Joe plays acoustic guitar. Joe chooses to have the entire house band backing him on his entire set so he lets us know and we make it happen.) When we have that information it makes it easier to call everyone from the audience to get them up on the stage as quickly as possible so we keep the excitement in the air.

As a musician, this night of music is worth checking out and taking part in. Any and all musicians are welcome!
