Seth Rosenbloom
Dec 29 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

Hailed as ‘the future of guitar playing’, and commanding the highest respect and praise from his colleagues and audiences alike, Seth Rosenbloom brings a highly personal, inspired and expressive approach to his music. Seth’s dazzling lines and singing vibrato on the guitar along with his distinctively sultry vocals result in his own interpretation of the blues.

Seth was born into a musical family in Waltham, Massachusetts. After playing violin in his earliest years and raised on a backdrop of Mozart and Beethoven, Seth took up guitar at age eleven, originally influenced by Elvis Presley and The Beatles. He soon began performing whenever he could at blues jams and solo concerts at local venues where he was able to distill and forge his own musical style and personality.

At the young age of sixteen, Seth won acceptance with a performance merit scholarship, to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. At his entrance audition, upon playing ‘Glasgow Kiss’ by John Petrucci, one judge declared that he had never heard such a technically clean performance of the piece. A dean’s list student at Berklee, Seth developed his compositional and technical skills in both jazz and improvisational music, extensively expanding his musical vocabulary.

Seth also had some of his most inspiring and memorable formative experiences as a student during summer sessions at the Raleigh Music Academy. Coming full circle in recent years, Seth has felt highly honored to be a featured artist at that very event, teaching and performing alongside Andy Timmons, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal (Guns N’ Roses) and Andy Wood (Rascal Flatts, LoCash). Seth has also been a regular at the International Musicians Summit (formerly International Guitar Summit) held annually in Durham, NC. He has been very active as a featured artist at many other performances, clinics and musical conventions throughout the country.

With a sound rooted in the blues, Seth draws inspiration from classic influences including Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB King, and Jimi Hendrix, as well as more contemporary guitarists such as Eric Gales, Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks. What makes Seth’s performances so special is his deeply committed intensity. Combined with his engaging and sincere personality, Seth never fails to delight audiences.

2017 is an especially exciting time, with an expanded East Coast touring schedule, performances at festivals, and especially the recording of Seth’s debut album.

So come on out and strap in for a great time!

The Juke Joint 5
Jan 6 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

If you’re looking for down home, old school, no-nonsense, house-rocking rhythm & blues, you’ve come to the right place! The Juke Joint 5 focuses on the sounds you might have heard emerging in the early 1950s from some distant, static-crackling, late night radio station: jumped-up urban rhythm and blues; the raw Delta country sound just recently getting electrified in Chicago; Memphis rockabilly; and the primitive beginnings of rock and roll.

The Juke Joint 5 (from left: Richard Malcolm, Silvertone Steve, Gretchen Bostrom, Dick “The Poet” Lourie, John Bunszell). Photo by Mark Layman.
The Juke Joint 5, formed several years ago, is a tight-knit and busy Boston-based group that continually awes audiences with their high energy stage presence and dedication to down home, old school, no-nonsense, house-rocking rhythm & blues. The group’s powerful vocals are provided by Gretchen Bostrom, performing the JJ5’s wide range of material from the group’s originals to songs by Ruth Brown, Louis Jordan, LaVern Baker, Don Covay, Big Mama Thornton, Little Richard, Slim Harpo, and other such classic blues/r&b performers. Joining Gretchen in the front line are two old pro blues players: Silvertone Steve is a slide guitar master and veteran of J.B. Hutto’s band; gritty saxman Dick “the Poet” Lourie performed frequently with the late Big Jack Johnson. John Bunszell on bass and drummer Richard Malcolm make up the band’s solid rhythm section. Both Richard and John have played with some of the area’s finest musicians: John has performed with Matt Stubbs, Racky Thomas and more; Richard has toured with Luther “Guitar” Johnson and has performed with a variety of Boston-based groups.

Band members work together on other projects that have grown out of the deeply shared commitment to their style of blues, including regular visits to Clarksdale, Mississippi, in the heart of the Delta, where Gretchen and Dick perform with local blues musicians.

Alex2e
Jan 9 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

My name is Alex Tuohey (or Alex2e) and I’m here to explain what I’m about. To be honest, I was never a music kid growing up. I played sports my whole life and never took to music like some others did. At my high school it was seen as “uncool” and although I never thought that, I wanted to be on the jock side of the house.

Later on in life at the age of 23, a major surgery laid me up on the couch for 2 months and I hit a pretty low place in my personal life. I’m not much of a TV guy and always had a “bucket list” type thought that I’d like to learn to play guitar. So that’s what I did. Through watching countless YouTube videos and online lessons I begin to teach myself guitar and drive my parents and later roommates insane in the process. The hours turned into months that turned into years. At 24 I begin to try and sing. I worked my ass off at both and finally played my first live show at 25, accompanying a local recording artist as part of a duo. Now at 28, I play roughly 10-12 shows a month, in cities like Hartford, Boston, Burlington, NYC and Chicago. Eventually I would like to play across the country. Impossible? That’s for you to decide. As cliché as it sounds, I don’t believe anything is impossible. I plan to keep grinding, outworking and taking any opportunity to let my music be heard. Whether it’s in front of 100s of people or it’s just in “My Mother’s Bathroom”, I will ride this dream until I can’t anymore.

My new EP is named “My Mother’s Bathroom” because for awhile it was the only place that would let me play. The Talkboy you see me using (giving “Home Alone” nostalgia) is a logo I use because as a kid I would hold it up to the TV and radio to try and catch my favorite songs on a cassette tape. It’s an honor that you even took the time to read this far to get to know me a little better. Eventually, I’ll have much cooler stuff to put in here but for now I think this is a good starting point. I hope to meet you soon.

The Matthew Stubbs Band
Jan 12 @ 9:30 pm – Jan 13 @ 12:00 am

Currently, Matthew Stubbs is performing with the legendary Charlie Musselwhite Band, as well as his own band, The Matthew Stubbs Band. He recently was named the 2009 Outstanding Guitarist from Blues Audience Magazine and was a 2009 Boston Music Award Nominee for Blues Act of the Year.

As a bandleader and composer, Stubbs has earned himself a reputation for penning soul-drenched Roots & Blues guitar instrumentals. His well-crafted songs are melodic and original; echoing the sounds of historic greats such as Booker T and the MGs, Earl Hooker, Lonnie Mack, and Freddie King. Blues guitarist Rick Holmstrom sums it up best: “The thing I like best about Matt Stubbs playing is that he leaves space. There are plenty of young blues guitarists who can play a whole lot of guitar, and Matt can hang with ’em all, but there are very few who understand that it’s important to let it breathe. I dig the economy and simplicity of Matt’s playing. He’s got an old soul.”

Matthew Stubbs released his first solo record “Soul Bender” on the VizzTone label group in August 2008, which received much critical acclaim. He will be following this with a new release in March 2010 entitled “Medford & Main” on Chicago based label Blue Bella Records.

In addition to playing with The Charlie Musselwhite band, Stubbs has also toured and recorded with many top Blues and Soul acts such as Junior Watson, John Nemeth, Janiva Magness, Lynwood Slim, Brian Templeton and Sax Gordon. Stubbs continues to maintain a full touring schedule, both as a bandleader and sideman. With the release of Medford & Main and many upcoming tours, 2010 looks to be one of his busiest years yet.

The southern New Hampshire guitarist Arthur James applies his craft to meaningful original blues guitar and vocals. His voice is so hefty you’d think he was seven feet tall. His guitar sounds larger than life too, due to the volumes of emotive release he offers throughout his music.

His songs are, vocally, melodically, and rhythmically, beautiful expressions of what has been going on inside him for quite some time. This singer-songwriter has the blues down pat. It’s a form of music that can expressed the highest highs and lowest lows of the human experience.

Gerry Moss
Jan 30 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Gerry Moss was born in Massachusetts in 1950 to an Air Force father. He was the oldest of 8 children.

As a musician, Gerry has lived and worked in Europe, New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, and Hardy, Arkansas.

He started to play guitar wile in England at the age of six. He watched an entertainer playing a guitar and he was hooked. He instantly knew he wanted a guitar.

Gerry attended a private high school where he began to write music. He wrote some rock tunes for a high school show that were well accepted. He began to perform in talent shows and began to attract attention as a performer.

In addition to guitar, Gerry is accomplished on Banjo, mandolin, bass Guitar, dobro Guitar and keyboards.

He is also a capable producer and engineer. As an example, a CD he produced and engineered called “Maiden Voyage” for The Michael Gray Band can be listened to in the “Music” page of this site.

Gerry has enjoyed teaching music and how to perform to young people with a patience and enthusiasm that has inspired them to meet their full potential.

Gerry can perform and headline either as a solo artist accompanying himself on guitar or with his band, MOSSMAN.

MOSSMAN performs as a 3 or 4 piece group. Each member of MOSSMAN contributes enormous skill and experience. Drummer John Ware was a member of the bands for Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and Michael Nesmith. MOSSMAN performs with abandon, yet is tight. Their performances are liberated but not reckless. You may view the MOSSMAN videos on this site (“Red Rooster” & “You Can’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover”). These videos will say more about MOSSMAN than words can tell.

Gerry also performs with bands named Red Barn Ramblers and Reckless Red.

Gerry’s first love is the blues. Much of his music reflects this. However, on the “Music” page of this site you can listen to Gerry performing other genre’s also as he performs solo on acoustic guitar. (See Nickels ‘n Dimes).

One of Gerry’s previous bands, “the Famous Unknowns,” was the house band at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Memphis, TN for over 2 years. A subsequent band, “Gerry Moss And The Drive” was also a regular at B.B. King’s.

At one time, due to his popularity and demand, Gerry performed up and down Beale Street headlining as a single or with a bad so often and at so many venues and events, he was referred to as “The Iron Man Of Beale Street.”

As a solo artist, Gerry has been the opening act for Leon Russell (3 times), Richie Havens (twice), Mose Allison, and Robby Krieger (guitarist for the Doors). Terry has been the band leader for David Lynn Jones’ band. He was also the bass guitar player for Lloyd Price (Personality, stagger Lee, Lawdy Miss Claudy).

Gerry has performed in shows with R&B and blues artists such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins, Rufus Thomas, Edgar Winter, Joe Walsh, Steve Winwood, Johnny Rivers, Mose Allison, Albert King, and Buddy Guy.

Gerry has also performed with C&W artists such as Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, Hank Williams, JR., and Clint Black’s band.

*******************************

Gerry Moss performed at Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration as a member of the Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band. Jerry Lee Lewis and Kool And The Gang were also on the bill. This is a photo of him at the inauguration with a friend. Nice threads, Gerry. Baby blue tux, white shoes. Crazy!

Open Mic ~ Wednesday Friends Day
Jan 31 @ 10:00 pm – Feb 1 @ 1:30 am

EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT Any style music, original or cover songs welcome. No matter what instrument you play, come on down and jam. A house band is there for back up. If you’re in a band, are part of a band, or a soloist, come on down for a great night! | 10pm-1.30am

You can play any of our instruments as a participant. We provide the entire music equipment setup (we encourage people to bring their own drum sticks, guitars & bass, but it is not required). Anyone can sign up and then play away, no purchase required!

Our Open Mic is run a little differently than most other Open Mics. Each participant is able to sign up for his/her desired slot and then choose which of the house band musicians that they want backing their set. (ex: Joe signs up for 11pm-11.20pm. Joe plays acoustic guitar. Joe chooses to have the entire house band backing him on his entire set so he lets us know and we make it happen.) After twenty years playing guitar, fifteen years in remission from leukemia, and now two albums into a career as a singer/ songwriter, Eric French has even more love for the blues than when he started. Celebrating milestones is satisfying, but the constant change that brings new experiences is what keeps things passionate. His band’s roster, his tone, even his songwriting style has matured since his debut double record in 2010. This is evidenced by his second LP, Old City Blues.

Joe Moss and Lauren Mitchell
Feb 17 @ 9:00 pm – Feb 18 @ 12:00 am

Few blues performers walk the walk to the degree of Chicago based guitarist/bandleader Joe Moss. One of the hardest working performers on the scene today. Not just an imitator of the music’s glorious past, he strives to find his own sound and material within the styles he chooses to play. And the music world is taking notice. This year, Moss will have the honor of being inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. The band is tight, featuring some of Chicago’s finest blues musicians. A talented singer, writer, and guitarist, Joe is a consistent and entertaining performer with a monster groove.

A guitarist since the age of 10, Moss was given his passport into the blues world by Buddy Scott, who noticed Moss at a jam session at Rosa’s Blues Lounge in Chicago. Soon, Moss was playing seven nights a week as a member of Buddy’s Rib Tip band. Moss’ guitar skills quickly became notorious on the local scene and made him an in-demand sideman. In 1996 Joe started his own band and has recorded and toured constantly to date. Some of the people he had the pleasure of playing with include: Buddy Guy, Little Milton,Willy “Big Eyes” Smith, Lurrie Bell, Zora Young, Charles Wilson, Lil’ Smokey Smothers, Syl Johnson, Big Time Sarah, Barkin’ Bill Smith, Lefty Dizz, Magic Slim, A.C. Reed, Billy Branch,Walter Scott, Hollywood Scott, Mike Wheeler, James Wheeler and Little Mack Simmons. Joe has backed these artists all over the world.

2013 Inductee into the Blues Hall of Fame!

Alex2e
Feb 20 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers
Feb 24 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Charismatic singer and guitarist Erin Harpe, along with her band the Delta Swingers, have become favorites around New England, with a growing fan base around the world. Their unique brand of dance music is rooted in vintage 1930’s Mississippi delta blues, then shaken and stirred with other genres like soul, funk, and reggae, evoking a wild southern juke joint where the whiskey and gin are flowing and everybody’s dancing.

Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers features Erin on vocals and lead guitar, backed by Jim Countryman on bass, Matt Charles on harmonica and Kendall Divoll on drums. Their critically acclaimed debut album Love Whip Blues (VizzTone) has been very well received, getting 4 stars in DownBeat Magazine, and airplay around the world including SeriusXM’s Bluesville!

Love Whip Blues is a refreshing, rootsy take on the blues, with songs about trains, hard luck and good luck, and of course (in the vein of Harpe’s other band, Lovewhip) shakin‘ your booty. Ten swinging tracks include four originals, Harpe’s take on songs by 1930’s blues artists, and a very unorthodox version of the classic John Prine song, “Angel From Montgomery”, famously recorded by Bonnie Raitt. Produced by Dave Gross (Candye Kane, Chris O’Leary, Albert Castiglia, Gina Sicilia) at Fat Rabbit Studios, the album shows off the band’s signature Charles River Delta Blues – their own country blues/roots/americana cocktail – including an appearance by guest star guitarist Bob Margolin (Muddy Waters band).
