Bobby Messano
Jun 14 @ 9:30 pm – Jun 15 @ 12:00 am

If you’ve never heard of Bobby Messano, he was born in New Jersey very close to New York City.He grew up in a time when a young guitarist could work hard, learn his craft and maybe become a guitar hero…(or at least play on a record or two) His main influences as a young guitarist were Jeff Beck,BB King,Eric Clapton,Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix. He also listened to as much Beatles and R&B as he could get his hands on.Bobby played in NJ club bands from the time that he was fourteen years old, and by the mid seventies, he had become rather well known in the North Jersey area. His first big break came when Craig Leon and Seymour Stein of now famous Sire Records tried to sign him to a solo deal.
Being young and maybe a lot scared, he graciously declined the offer and waited to fade into oblivion, despite his yearning to become a famous guitarist. By a strange quirk of fate (or maybe because someone was desperate) he received a call a few months later from John Scher’s office. John was a well known promoter in the NJ/NY metropolitan area. A band that John managed, named Stanky Brown (yes an odd name-BUT A GREAT BAND AND THEY WERE ON THE RADIO!) were in need of a lead guitarist and singer. Bobby auditioned, got the gig, and went immediately on the road opening for the #1 band of the moment,KANSAS. Bobby stayed with Stanky Brown, recording a single and an album. They toured constantly opening for The Allman Brothers,Outlaws,Boston,Beach Boys Steve Miller…you name it. After his stint with SB, he then joined the band STARZ, who were already a world famous band. He recorded the now infamous Coliseum Rock with them and continued to tour opening for RUSH, TED NUGENT,STYX and others. After STARZ breakup, Bobby settled into the session, scene playing on many records including BENNY MARDONES’ “INTO THE NIGHT”..
His musical resume’ included time with Tycoon,Ellen Foley and Suzanne Fellini. He then joined FRANKE & THE KNOCKOUTS who were just coming off two Top Ten singles. With the KO’s he played headlining shows and opened for Toto,The Beach Boys and many more. Bobby also continued his session work in New York recording with Clarence Clemmons and playing on many of the fledgling MTV jingles and drops including “THE BASEMENT TAPES” theme. In between all of this he took six months to do a European/UK tour with one of his heroes….STEVE WINWOOD. It was an amazing time for the young NJ guitarist. He met many famous musician’s including another hero…ERIC CLAPTON. Over the course of the next five years, Bobby played on dozens of records. Fiona, Joe Lynn Turner, Robey….even David Hasselhoff….he even ghosted on some records that will of course remain nameless. NYC was a great place to be a musician. In 1987, Bobby won the coveted spot on LOU GRAMM’S solo tour supporting his hit “MIDNIGHT BLUE”. He toured the States,Puerto Rico and Germany in the summer of ‘87 with Lou and band.
In 1989 Bobby released the self titled “MESSANO” CD on Relativity/Strategic/CBS Records. The CD garnered amazing reviews (Four KKKK’s in Kerrang) and lots of airplay and to this day it comes up in many Top 50 lists for ‘80’s AOR Classics. In 1990 while on a tour of Germany with Polygram artist ROBIN BECK, he made a decision that he wanted to put a band together doing Blues,Funk and Traditional Blues songs. In 1992 Bobby Messano & NBO was born. Through many personnel and personal changes,Bobby and his crew traveled hundreds of thousands of miles playing over 2500 shows between 1992 and 1999. In 1997 he recorded his second critically acclaimed solo CD…DOMINION ROADS. The CD was released on Ichiban/EMI Records, which went bankrupt shortly after it’s release. The collapse of the label left many excellent artists stranded. Between 1999 and 2002,Bobby searched for a label to re-release DOMINION ROADS and moved from Virginia Beach to Nashville. He also became one of the Blues Rock stars on the fledgling MP3.COM staying at # 1 for 6 months. In 2002, DOMINION ROADS found a new home with Fishhead Records in Cleveland. The renamed, remastered and repackaged DR came out as HOLDIN’ GROUND and garnered a First Round Grammy Nomination and rave reviews World Wide from Blues Radio and the Blues Press.
Bobby lived in Nashville for 9 years, with a short and not so sweet stint in Southwest Florida. He continued to write, produce and play and toured out of Nashville with MCA artist Alecia Elliot, and Number One charting artists Steve Holy, Rodney Atkins and Jimmy Wayne. Bobby also continued doing acoustic and electric dates both solo and with his band. In 2006 he co-Produced the new Shadows of Knight CD, “A KNIGHT TO REMEMBER” and went on the road supporting it on the “LITTLE STEVEN UNDERGROUND GARAGE BAND TOUR”. In 2007, for the first time in nearly 20 years, Bobby relocated to the NYC/NJ area after the passing of his father. 2008 was an exciting year with the re-release of his critically acclaimed 1989 tour de force Rock CD “MESSANO” . Succesful supporting shows in Las Vegas and The Rocklahoma Festival followed as well as some Headlining and co-headling (Fabulous T-Birds) shows and festivals. In 2008 Bobby also finished his follow up to “HOLDIN’ GROUND” , “TRIALS TRAUMAS TRIBULATIONS AND DEMOS” which contained new tracks, demos and songs that were written for TV and other artists, most unreleased. It was released in January 2009 on ITunes,Amazon MP3 and Rhapsody. Bobby spent 2009 on the road supporting TTT&D. 2010 began with Bobby signing to Wayne Brook’s Chicago based BLUES ISLAND organization, and his first LIVE CD, “LIVE IN MADISON” was released on March 12,2010.

King Arthur Junior
Jun 26 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

King Arthur Junior was born and raised in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. A talented athlete growing up, hockey was his main sport. He was recruited to play Division III college hockey at Castleton University. This led him to meet a friend who made him listen to The Allman Brothers Band “Live At The FIllmore East.” King Arthur Junior’s life would be forever changed. Up to that point, he had only played acoustic guitar. His primary influence was Dave Matthews, but, once those electric blues lines were ingrained, an electric guitar was a must. With his first Telecaster at the age of 21, King Arthur Junior has set out to figure out how to play those lines just like the greats: Hendrix, Clapton, Allman, and all of the Kings.

King Arthur Junior resides in Rutland, Vermont with his young children and his Wife, Melissa. He now has the ability to play in front of crowds. King Arthur Junior is on a mission to spread peace and love across the land, playing out everywhere he can. The King was recently selected for the Massachusetts Solo Artist Awards and looks forward to using this opportunity to expand.

Taking his playing to the next level, he has decided it is time to share his knowledge and will be giving guitar lessons locally.

Be on the look out for a three track EP coming this fall.

The Love Dogs
Jun 30 @ 9:00 pm – 11:55 pm

The Love Dogs’ Recipe For The Blues

Take one red-hot horn section – we’re talkin’ alto, tenor, baritone saxes and trombone – down and dirty. Add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar. Pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review magazine called “the best in the business”, and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Season with a few years on the road tearing up juke joints, festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada and on both sides of the Atlantic. Sound tasty? It’s a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence; it’s THE LOVE DOGS.

Based out of Boston, this hard swinging septet just celebrated its 20th year wowing audiences and critics alike with their combination of great musicianship and pure fun. The Dogs combine elements of jump blues, New Orleans R&B and early rock ‘n’ roll into their own powerhouse sound. You can hear it loud and clear on their three Tone-Cool cds “I’m Yo Dog” (1996), “Heavy Petting” (1998) and “New Tricks” (2000). Many of the cuts from these three discs have been blues radio favorites, several of the Dogs’ signature original songs have been used in feature films and on television, and one has even been sampled for use on the upcoming Run-DMC cd!

But as much fun as the Dogs’ studio discs are, it’s nothing compared to seeing them live. FMQB magazine called Love Dogs’ concerts “the stuff of legend” where “soulful vocals, killer grooves, spontaneity and pure entertainment play equal parts”. With their newest cd “Live And On Fire” The Love Dogs have finally captured the unbridled energy of their live show on disc. Far from a live retread of previously recorded tunes, “Live And On Fire” features ten brand new tracks captured live on a summer weekend at the famous Sea Note nightclub on the outskirts of Boston.

“It’s important to us to have fun, and sometimes even we don’t know what we’re gonna do next.” says lead vocalist and songwriter EDDIE “DUATO” SCHEER, a former sideman of R&B legend Johnny Adams. “We have a lot of humor in our music, and we love to surprise each other and make each other laugh. When a crowd can see that, it becomes contagious. Pretty soon they’re giving us back as much energy as we’re putting out, and the whole thing keeps escalating. We call it the ‘tribal love vibe'”.

Featuring some of the Northeast’s best players, it’s impossible not to notice the high level of musicianship in this band. “We’re all lifetime fans of blues, jazz, and R&B, and we all have a real reverence for the music. Part of what makes this band special is that we really play together as a unit, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” The band’s lineup consists of SCHEER, ALIZON LISSANCE (keyboards, vocals), MYANNA (alto/tenor sax, vocals), GLENN SHAMBROOM (guitar, baritone sax), RANDY BRAMWELL (bass, vocals), STEVE BROWN (drums, vocals), along with part time Dogs MARIO PERRETT (tenor sax/vocals), MARK PAQUIN (tenor sax, trombone) and old friend “SAX” GORDON BEADLE (tenor and baritone sax).

Voted “Best New England Band” by Blues Audience magazine, the Dogs are Part Rat Pack party, part 20th century musical encyclopedia, and part revival meeting. The New York Post says “Even though the music could make Leonardo’s David dance, it’s the songwriting that separates these dogs from the rest of the pack” and Blues Review agrees “If there were a Superbowl for crowd pleasing rhythm & blues, a photo of The Love Dogs would be on every Wheaties box in America.” Scheer sums it up by saying “If this band doesn’t put a smile on your face, check your pulse because you just might be dead.”

After twenty years playing guitar, fifteen years in remission from leukemia, and now two albums into a career as a singer/ songwriter, Eric French has even more love for the blues than when he started. Celebrating milestones is satisfying, but the constant change that brings new experiences is what keeps things passionate. His band’s roster, his tone, even his songwriting style has matured since his debut double record in 2010. This is evidenced by his second LP, Old City Blues.

“We play some original songs and some covers,” the dapper young man told the Hinge crowd, “and we do a few traditional songs, too.” Therein lies the mix, but the narrative description can’t do justice to the treatment that all these songs get. Imagine an olde-west swang thang electrified and brought forward in time so that the end result would be both new and nostalgic, garage-y loose and respectful of tradition, all at the same time. The guy’s style is unique, engaging, and interesting- surely a good fit for the Hinge. Tom Sawyer’s bass and Jeff Turcotte’s drums fill the place well while they complement the material. Backing vocals from behind the drum kit catch the listener’s notice in particular, especially considering that Jeff’s drumming can be heard all around the area- but his singing, well… more might be a good thing!

Alex2e
Jul 10 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

My name is Alex Tuohey (or Alex2e) and I’m here to explain what I’m about. To be honest, I was never a music kid growing up. I played sports my whole life and never took to music like some others did. At my high school it was seen as “uncool” and although I never thought that, I wanted to be on the jock side of the house.

Later on in life at the age of 23, a major surgery laid me up on the couch for 2 months and I hit a pretty low place in my personal life. I’m not much of a TV guy and always had a “bucket list” type thought that I’d like to learn to play guitar. So that’s what I did. Through watching countless YouTube videos and online lessons I begin to teach myself guitar and drive my parents and later roommates insane in the process. The hours turned into months that turned into years. At 24 I begin to try and sing. I worked my ass off at both and finally played my first live show at 25, accompanying a local recording artist as part of a duo. Now at 28, I play roughly 10-12 shows a month, in cities like Hartford, Boston, Burlington, NYC and Chicago. Eventually I would like to play across the country. Impossible? That’s for you to decide. As cliché as it sounds, I don’t believe anything is impossible. I plan to keep grinding, outworking and taking any opportunity to let my music be heard. Whether it’s in front of 100s of people or it’s just in “My Mother’s Bathroom”, I will ride this dream until I can’t anymore.

My new EP is named “My Mother’s Bathroom” because for awhile it was the only place that would let me play. The Talkboy you see me using (giving “Home Alone” nostalgia) is a logo I use because as a kid I would hold it up to the TV and radio to try and catch my favorite songs on a cassette tape. It’s an honor that you even took the time to read this far to get to know me a little better. Eventually, I’ll have much cooler stuff to put in here but for now I think this is a good starting point. I hope to meet you soon.

The Matthew Stubbs Band
Jul 14 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Currently, Matthew Stubbs is performing with the legendary Charlie Musselwhite Band, as well as his own band, The Matthew Stubbs Band. He recently was named the 2009 Outstanding Guitarist from Blues Audience Magazine and was a 2009 Boston Music Award Nominee for Blues Act of the Year.

As a bandleader and composer, Stubbs has earned himself a reputation for penning soul-drenched Roots & Blues guitar instrumentals. His well-crafted songs are melodic and original; echoing the sounds of historic greats such as Booker T and the MGs, Earl Hooker, Lonnie Mack, and Freddie King. Blues guitarist Rick Holmstrom sums it up best: “The thing I like best about Matt Stubbs playing is that he leaves space. There are plenty of young blues guitarists who can play a whole lot of guitar, and Matt can hang with ’em all, but there are very few who understand that it’s important to let it breathe. I dig the economy and simplicity of Matt’s playing. He’s got an old soul.”

Matthew Stubbs released his first solo record “Soul Bender” on the VizzTone label group in August 2008, which received much critical acclaim. He will be following this with a new release in March 2010 entitled “Medford & Main” on Chicago based label Blue Bella Records.

In addition to playing with The Charlie Musselwhite band, Stubbs has also toured and recorded with many top Blues and Soul acts such as Junior Watson, John Nemeth, Janiva Magness, Lynwood Slim, Brian Templeton and Sax Gordon. Stubbs continues to maintain a full touring schedule, both as a bandleader and sideman. With the release of Medford & Main and many upcoming tours, 2010 looks to be one of his busiest years yet.

James Armstrong
Jul 20 @ 9:30 pm – 11:30 pm

Guitarist, singer and songwriter James Armstrong was born to play the blues. His mother was a blues singer. His father played jazz guitar. Born in Los Angeles, California, Armstrong formed his first band in the seventh grade and by the age of 17 he was touring the country. Today he travels the world and continues to infuse his voice and guitar playing with his unique personality and seasoned skills.

In his twenties James was the youngest guitar player to play in Smokey Wilson’s legendary band. James also helped form a band in Southern California called Mama Roo. That collaboration resulted in an album of the same name, and his first recording contract with Crescendo Records. In the early 90’s James got plenty of exposure to his musical influences, including Albert Collins, who spent quality time with James and taught him a few tricks. Shortly after that he was discovered and signed by HighTone Records owner Bruce Bromberg who found Robert Cray, and Joe Louis Walker.

Then, just as he was about to tour with his critically acclaimed first album Sleeping With A Stranger, tragedy struck. The events surrounding a home invasion left Armstrong without the use of his left hand and arm, including permanent nerve damage. This threatened to end his career forever. But, thanks to the support of friends, fans and the blues community Armstrong came back two years later with a second album, Dark Night.

What Armstrong lost in the tragedy he gained in “a whole new respect for the music itself, the power in slow blues, how the silences between the notes are as important as the notes”. Armstrong also turned his efforts to perfecting his songwriting, vocal and slide guitar skills, all the while developing his gift for turning hardship into song. The results were a third album, Got It Goin’ On. The CD garnered two WC Handy award nominations for best blues guitarist and for best song of the year with Pennies and Picks. The CD, Got It Goin’ On, with its new grooves and surprises, was praised by critics for its part in redefining the blues and keeping the genre alive.

Over the years Armstrong has performed in many countries including North America, Europe, Scandinavia, Asia and the Middle East. He has worked beside Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Keb Mo, Chaka Khan, Coco Montoya, Walter Trout, Tommy Castro, Roy Brown, Shemekia Copeland, Charlie Musselwhite, Ricky Lee Jones, Joe Louis Walker, Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix’s drummer), Peter Tork (The Monkees), and Jan & Dean, just to name a few.

James skill as a performer has not gone unnoticed by filmmakers. Several of his songs have been chosen for movie soundtracks. Bank of Love was used in Hear No Evil, with Martin Sheen and Marlee Matlin. Two Sides to Every Story is featured in Speechless with Michael Keaton and Geena Davis, also in The Florentine with Jeremy Davies and Luke Perry.

His latest CD “Guitar Angels” was released on Catfood Records. In 2014 it was awarded “Best Traditional Release” by Blues411.

Seen live, Armstrong has a confident stage presence that combines grace with mischief. Few blues artists know how to play the crowd as James can, shifting dynamics from a whisper to a growl. Wherever he travels around the world his magnetism continues to hush a noisy rabble or entice a crowd to follow him out into the street or down the length of a beach.

Wattle and Daub
Jul 24 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

When Wattle & Daub come to the stage, their genuine affection and humor are infectious. Whether it’s Susan rolling her eyes at one of Tim’s awkward chord changes or their knowing glances at each other during a love song, their goal is to get their listeners involved in the music, and yes, that often means a hearty invitation to sing along with them.
Their name comes from a centuries old construction method. In describing how they decided on the name during a road trip, they wrote:
“We saw this country and its beauty. We thought of how immigrants from all over the world, of different races and different beliefs have come to help build this nation, to weave it together, to strengthen it. We thought of how our own relationship is growing and weaving together. We believe in the country and in each other. We are making music. We are building our lives. We want the nation to grow. We think the process is simple. All we need is some Wattle & Daub.”
Susan and Tim Mocarski met in the fall of 2013 at an open mic in Kenosha, Wisconsin where Tim was performing. A few months later, they sang their first song together, and they’ve been singing and writing songs together ever since. Married in the fall of 2016, they are devoted to keeping the folk music tradition alive and encouraging their audiences to sing along. Struggles and Love, is their first album.

Sean Chambers
Jul 26 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

“Guitarist Chambers achieves the distinctly American blues/soul/country/rock sound that the Stones used to aspire to long ago.” – Jerry Shriver, USA TODAY

Florida born Sean Chambers toured with the legendary Hubert Sumlin as his guitarist and band leader from 1998-2003. Britain’s own Guitarist magazine named Chambers as “One of the top 50 blues guitarists of the last century.” After his tenure with Sumlin, he performed on his own, and in 2003 was asked to headline the prestigious Maryport Blues Festival.
In 2004, shortly after his second CD release, Sean was forced to relocate when his home in Florida was struck by two of the major hurricanes that hit the state, and flooded out his home. In 2009, Chambers went back into the studio to record what would be his most critically-acclaimed album to date, Ten Til Midnight.

When Ten Til Midnight was released in October, 2009, it garnered rave reviews and also appeared on the Living Blues chart for the first three months after its release. It received steady airplay in 45 states around the U.S, as well as many markets overseas. The title cut was featured on “The House of Blues Radio Hour” as a “Blues Breaker;” and the album also generated significant airplay on Sirius/XM Radio’s blues channel as a “Pick to Click.”
The Sean Chambers Band released Live from the Long Island Blues Warehouse in 2011, which featured 10 tracks of mostly originals, along with Sean’s distinctively searing takes on “Full Moon on Main Street,” a highlight song from an early album by The Kinsey Report; as well as a blistering version of Elmore James’ “Dust My Broom,” which recalls Johnny Winter in its approach.

Arno and the Low Down
Jul 28 @ 9:00 pm – 11:30 pm

Arno & The Low Down have all been playing in bands for years, out of the same old cliche’ songbooks, wondering, “What happened to all of these great rock tunes that no one covers?” Well, a great song is a great song, no matter where or when it came from! So we’ve put our sound on, modernized, and revived the “Old School” rock style that we grew up with, mix in some of our own, and apply that passion to some current music too,
So come on out and strap in for a great time!

Gerry Moss
Jul 31 @ 9:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Gerry Moss was born in Massachusetts in 1950 to an Air Force father. He was the oldest of 8 children.

As a musician, Gerry has lived and worked in Europe, New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, and Hardy, Arkansas.

He started to play guitar wile in England at the age of six. He watched an entertainer playing a guitar and he was hooked. He instantly knew he wanted a guitar.

Gerry attended a private high school where he began to write music. He wrote some rock tunes for a high school show that were well accepted. He began to perform in talent shows and began to attract attention as a performer.

In addition to guitar, Gerry is accomplished on Banjo, mandolin, bass Guitar, dobro Guitar and keyboards.

He is also a capable producer and engineer. As an example, a CD he produced and engineered called “Maiden Voyage” for The Michael Gray Band can be listened to in the “Music” page of this site.

Gerry has enjoyed teaching music and how to perform to young people with a patience and enthusiasm that has inspired them to meet their full potential.

Gerry can perform and headline either as a solo artist accompanying himself on guitar or with his band, MOSSMAN.

MOSSMAN performs as a 3 or 4 piece group. Each member of MOSSMAN contributes enormous skill and experience. Drummer John Ware was a member of the bands for Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, and Michael Nesmith. MOSSMAN performs with abandon, yet is tight. Their performances are liberated but not reckless. You may view the MOSSMAN videos on this site (“Red Rooster” & “You Can’t Judge A Book By It’s Cover”). These videos will say more about MOSSMAN than words can tell.

Gerry also performs with bands named Red Barn Ramblers and Reckless Red.

Gerry’s first love is the blues. Much of his music reflects this. However, on the “Music” page of this site you can listen to Gerry performing other genre’s also as he performs solo on acoustic guitar. (See Nickels ‘n Dimes).

One of Gerry’s previous bands, “the Famous Unknowns,” was the house band at B.B. King’s Blues Club in Memphis, TN for over 2 years. A subsequent band, “Gerry Moss And The Drive” was also a regular at B.B. King’s.

At one time, due to his popularity and demand, Gerry performed up and down Beale Street headlining as a single or with a bad so often and at so many venues and events, he was referred to as “The Iron Man Of Beale Street.”

As a solo artist, Gerry has been the opening act for Leon Russell (3 times), Richie Havens (twice), Mose Allison, and Robby Krieger (guitarist for the Doors). Terry has been the band leader for David Lynn Jones’ band. He was also the bass guitar player for Lloyd Price (Personality, stagger Lee, Lawdy Miss Claudy).

Gerry has performed in shows with R&B and blues artists such as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Albert Collins, Rufus Thomas, Edgar Winter, Joe Walsh, Steve Winwood, Johnny Rivers, Mose Allison, Albert King, and Buddy Guy.

Gerry has also performed with C&W artists such as Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, Hank Williams, JR., and Clint Black’s band.

*******************************

Gerry Moss performed at Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration as a member of the Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboy Band. Jerry Lee Lewis and Kool And The Gang were also on the bill. This is a photo of him at the inauguration with a friend. Nice threads, Gerry. Baby blue tux, white shoes. Crazy!

You can play any of our instruments as a participant. We provide the entire music equipment setup (we encourage people to bring their own drum sticks, guitars & bass, but it is not required). Anyone can sign up and then play away, no purchase required!

Our Open Mic is run a little differently than most other Open Mics. Each participant is able to sign up for his/her desired slot and then choose which of the house band musicians that they want backing their set. (ex: Joe signs up for 11pm-11.20pm. Joe plays acoustic guitar. Joe chooses to have the entire house band backing him on his entire set so he lets us know and we make it happen.) When we have that information it makes it easier to call everyone from the audience to get them up on the stage as quickly as possible so we keep the excitement in the air.

As a musician, this night of music is worth checking out and taking part in. Any and all musicians are welcome!
